I am spent. I don’t think I like the 48 hour film competitions yet year after year I find myself knee deep in the battle grounds. We shot all the principle photography today and Tomasso is editing as I post this. We plan to have a rough cut tomorrow so our location sound man slash screen writer Dave Braxton can do a mix on his console. All things considered I feel quite pleased with the experience so far, but it is not over yet! The Ex1 and Letus extreme adapter had its quirks and I don’t recommend flying this with a steady cam 4000, specially considering its not designed to that but I work with what I got…for example, Las vegas sunlight! Good thing it was a great day to shoot cause aside practical interior lights in the location, I was relying on 90% natural daylight. No candle like the one in the sky. We had some hiccups along the way but when the kinks got ironed out it was full sail. Now I need to lay down cause I officially have lower back problems…more to come.

So this is what we are working with. We have been brain storming for the last 4 hours and have a handful of good ideas but not agreed on a single one yet. Fun times. Who ever said this was easy? More to come.

Vegas or bust…? 48 hour film competetion, round 2!

Never thought I would want to do another one of these insane 48 hour films competitions but I have this little problem where I tend to say “Yes” to just about every oportunity that comes a knocken. Director Tommaso Cardile from Milano Italy has decided to wrangle a crew from LA and NY to meet up and compete in the in Las Vegas (of all places) 48 hour film competition. I just got here, and so far so good. We have DP (yours truley) we are shooting on a EX1 with Letus Extreme 35mm adaptor (thanks to Daniel Dacian) and a set of my Zeiss ZF master primes…I am doing some test now and I really like what I am seeing. I decided to not shoot on RED this go around due loss of time in Post production and time is the name of the game. With the EX1 I can shoot native 1080 and Tomasso can cut native and we deliver online in 1080…wonderful. Locations…check. We rented pretty impressive penthouse looking condo that over looks the strip, and for cheap too! We are waiting now on the talent to come in from LA and in about 30 minutes we are heading to the 48 HQ to pick up our assignment. I probably wont have any time to blog along the way but I will share our results as of this sunday we will have a completed film. Over and out.

My friend Patrick Sarni came to visit New York City a few weeks ago and with a mission to write and produce a sketch in 48 hours. As a result, I present to you “The Borough”, a comedic spoof on reality TV show S@&! This script was originally written for an all girl cast but when that fell through, Sarni made a re write the evening before and ended up casting the crew. Enjoy.

Ikonoskop update: All hands on deck

Spoke with Viktor Björk, the managing director from Ikonoskop today in regards to the status of their new creation, the a-cam dII. Viktor sounded quite positive about the progress and has reported over 28 people working tightly around the clock to meet the new deadlines, now slated for April. I have witnessed a variety of different technological developments over the years and usually they tend to suffer the most time in the home stretch dealing with all the countless final details, one of which they are working out now is power management. For my guerrilla film making purposes, I need this rig to boot within seconds. Viktor continued to report an overwhelming amount of pre-orders since the announcement at IBC last September and If you order one today you are looking at a June/July delivery. UPDATE: the 1st deliver of this camera series Zero is in question at the moment although reports on the IKONOSKOP forum suggest February. I will update soon.

Dream the Impossible

My neighbor Ion Bloom, known for his “Crimson Workflow” just returned from his last “Shot on RED” gig that he was technician on and shared some his experience over at reduser.net.

We shot over 30 interviews and countless re-enactment scenes in six different cities. Awesome crew, producers, dp, and director. First commercial I’ve done where the crew bonded like a feature. Its refreshing to see a big name like Honda spend their money funding something inspirational beyond just selling cars. I felt the series was well produced across the board from direction to the cinematography, nice music choices as well. You decide for youself.

Joe Herbert for his spot “Free Doritos”? Not exactly who I thought it would be. I am not going to waste time talking about this spot but I will say keep your eyes peeled for commercial competitions if your trying to get your foot in that door, chances are you can do better then this.
