So this is what we are working with. We have been brain storming for the last 4 hours and have a handful of good ideas but not agreed on a single one yet. Fun times. Who ever said this was easy? More to come.

Red Superbowl spot by the Dandy Dwarves: Too Delicious

Some of my film school comrades, The Dandy Dwarves, produced this spot directed by Mike Goubeaux for the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” commercial competition. They made it to the top 5 and the voting begins. Tomorrow, during the Super Bowl the winning spot will be revealed at the game for millions to admire. They did a stand up job and I think they have a solid chance at winning, what do you think? Best of luck fellows.

Lucas Krost of “The Branching” down in Richmond VA decided to submit a short for film for the Project Direct Sundance competition in association with YouTube. The catch was we only had 72 hours to crank this film out with no budget so it was quite a run and gun affair, true guerrilla film making. I only had a couple tungsten 500s and 2x 1200 watt HMIs for lighting but was fortunate to have support from the local Richmond crew over at Studio 108. It was one hell of a showdown. I used a RED in a lightweight configuration with Zeiss ZFs. The project was cut in 48 hours and delivered. Last I heard we would were almost finalist but were unfortunately disqualified for profanity. I guess someone overlooked the guidelines? It was still worth it in the end and most everyone was pleased considering our time limitations.

House keeping at Gotham…

Been a while since I have reached out into the blogosphere and I have much to share in the world of indie cinema but unfortunaltley I have been dealing with some maintenance issues and now that I have most of it all sorted out I can get back to posting. I have been staying busy in the field, RED 1781 stays hired and I tend to go where she goes. I used this downtime to gather notes, stils and frame grabs from many of the projects I have worked and will be prepping to post.

UPDATE: Ok remind me not to mess with the inards of the blog brain, every time I tinker around I end up paralyzing one side of Gotham. Good news is we are updated, better, faster and stronger then before.

Patrick Sarni departs…we will miss him.

Thats right, Patrick Sarni has officially departed the big apple to make a new life out in LA. Patrick is a writer producer so he should be right at home, not sure what this means for JoyHog but if they need a NY correspondent I have volunteered to help out where I can. Fear not… Patrick has not officially cut the umbilical cord to Manhattan, when I last spoke with Patrick he said

YOU SEE! He will attempt some bi coastal relation with liberty city and to prove that he claims to be here to help produce the 48 hour competition that is coming up in a couple of weeks! We solute you Patrick, best of luck in the city of sin…in the meantime I will prep the couch for your return.

FYI: Only if you catch this post fresh, The eyeballs of the Incredible Hulk (see Ad on right) were actually rendered from Patrick Sarni’s eyes.

RED TECH to DP, notes from the field.

Sorry I have not updated as soon as I wanted to, I have been hustling on the streets and in the field to keep this vessel afloat and continue, aka… bring home the bacon. I have been going non stop the last two weeks working on several RED camera shoots so I have lots to post about my experience and some images behind the scenes and from the Mysterium (RED footage frame grabs). I am going to gather my notes and update this evening as soon as I catch my breath.

RED 1781 UPDATE: Spoke with my RED dan who says they are catching up fast with back order and trying to beat the current delivery schedule but I am still on standby for my tracking numbers. I hope to continue getting RED related work in the meantime.

RED 1781 UPDATE 6/2/08: Spoke with Dan again today, he says 1781 could ship this week!

This was a exclusive demo for the RED party during NAB 08 just a few weeks ago. As as I was leaving the party I managed to catch up with BIRGER Engineer Erik Widding very a brief moment as he gave a final rundown of his much anticipated 35mm canon mount for RED ONE. Erik and his wife are great folks, I want to thank them for showing up and hopefully this little video will restore any lost faith in his product. I managed to play with it for bit and I must say I was very impressed how super responsive the focus felt and look forward to taking delivery myself. LINK FOR MORE INFO COMING SOON.
